Hardware Company Modernizes and Migrates EBS Workloads on OCI
Challenge
- Understand the benefits of a migration to the public cloud while minimizing risk and reducing overall environment spend.
- Provide a cloud native solution wherever possible maximizing OCI free services with ITC’s expertise to ensure scope and cost creep was eliminated wherever possible.
- Provide a production cutover with little to no business interruption.
Solution
- ITC completed an inflight upgrade to Oracle database version 19c using its proprietary upgrade methodology, mitigating the need to address the upgrade post-migration resulting in cost savings of time and money.
- Utilizing OCI native functionality, ITC configured the customer tenancy taking advantage of the following native services:
- High availability with migration of the environment to two OCI regions.
- Migrate the databases to Oracle Database Cloud Service, allowing the customer to take advantage of Oracle’s continuous improvements on its databases.
- Implement OCI native backup functionality to ensure data protection and disaster recovery capabilities for the migrated workloads.
- Configure an enterprise monitoring solution for automated notifications and work tickets within ITC for ongoing managed services.
Results
- The customer’s strategy of utilizing pay-as-you-go on OCI limits long-term commitments while also allowing them to be unconstrained when considering a future roadmap.
- Use of OCI reserved instances and capacity reservations for predictable workloads secures infrastructure resources at lower rates and provides predictability in budget planning.
- OCI native reporting allows for ongoing cost tracking.
- ITC completed the migration cutover during a weekend, including the database upgrade, with no extended outage windows.
- ITC seamlessly migrated its staff from the migration project into managed services, eliminating the need for knowledge transfer and potential business disruption.
