Earlier than previous years, Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco (OOW) started in mid-September 2019 with the theme “Think Autonomous”. Below you’ll find the highlights from OOW19.
Application Announcements At OOW19
Oracle E-Business Suite certified with Oracle Database 19c and will become a PDB
E-Business Suite Customers can plan their EBS and database upgrades now. Customers felt locked in on older database releases and Oracle waived the Extended Support for the database for those who still are on Oracle 11.2.0.4 and 12.1.0.2 as a database for an EBS installation.
With this news from Oracle, customers will be able to upgrade to Oracle Database 19c, no matter if they are in EBS 12.1.3 or 12.2.4+. When upgrading your Oracle E-Business Suite to Oracle Database 19c, the database will be converted to single-tenant, i.e., a CDB with one PDB. No extra Multitenant license is required, but it is highly recommended to carefully read the Interoperability note (MOS Note 2552181.1 – Interoperability Notes: Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 with Oracle Database 19c).
Oracle Business Network
Allows B2B companies to quickly connect with any other trading partners registered on the network. Oracle Business Network simplifies this process by enabling customers to easily search for and connect to trading partners who are already registered on the network directly from within Oracle Cloud Applications or Applications Unlimited such as E-Business Suite.
Oracle Analytics for Applications
Oracle announced a new AI voice-assistant chatbot embedded in Oracle apps (ERP, HCM, CX, SCM). It leverages NLP and NLU to build machine learning models that are specific to applications being used and can be integrated with tools such as Microsoft Teams, Slack, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, Siri, and Alexa.
Oracle Digital Assistant is pre-built with AI-trained enterprise skills across ERP, SCM, HCM, and CX and can connect to multiple back-end systems simultaneously to orchestrate user interactions across various application skills.

Continued Innovation on Oracle ERP & Enterprise Performance Management (EPM)
- Intelligent Document Recognition: Improves the accurate and efficient ingestion of financial information from pdf and other popular financial document formats to reduce or eliminate manual invoice entry. Utilizing self-learning capabilities, the system recognizes and processes supplier invoices and adapts to changes within invoice formats over time for superior accuracy, faster access, and a reduction in manual entry errors.
- Predictive Planning: in Oracle EPM Cloud, auto Predict improves the quality and timeliness of planning decisions by enabling customers to access predictions at data load time, see prediction and forecast variances, identify variance patterns and make plan revisions on the fly.
- Joint Venture Accounting for Oil & Gas: Helps customers reduce partner disputes, improve cash flow and gain real-time visibility into the financial state of joint ventures by automating transaction processing and introducing role-based tools to manage exceptions.
Technology Announcements At #OOW19
Always Free Autonomous Database and Cloud Infrastructure
This was probably one of the most significant announcements which most Oracle Tech users were expecting since the free credits for a month were not sufficient to try out new things.
It includes new “Always Free services” for anyone to try the world’s first self-driving database and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure for an “unlimited time.” Now, organizations large and small, developers, students, and educators can build, learn, and explore the full functionality of Oracle Autonomous Database and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, including Compute VMs, Block and Object Storage, and Load Balancer—all of the essentials for developers to build complete applications on Oracle Cloud.
Oracle and VMware Partnership
Oracle and VMware announced a partnership to help customers leverage the companies’ enterprise software and cloud solutions to make a move to the cloud.
Customers will be able to support their hybrid cloud strategies by running VMware Cloud Foundation on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. With this new solution, customers will be able to easily migrate VMware vSphere workloads to Oracle’s Generation 2 Cloud Infrastructure and take advantage of consistent infrastructure and operations. As a part of this partnership, Oracle will also provide technical support for Oracle software running in VMware environments both in customer on-premise data centers and Oracle-certified cloud environments.
Oracle and Microsoft Partnership
Oracle is expanding its regions interconnected with Microsoft Azure. Since June 2019, Oracle has announced two commercial regions that are interconnected with Microsoft Azure – Ashburn and London. In the next few quarters, it is globally expanding the interconnect to U.S. West, Asia, and Europe. Similar to commercial regions, Oracle Cloud and Microsoft Azure will extend their interoperability into government regions.
New Oracle Cloud Regions by the end of 2020
Oracle announced a plan to launch 20 new Oracle Cloud regions by the end of 2020, for a total of 36 Oracle Cloud Infrastructure regions. This expansion includes regions in new countries and dual, geographically separated regions in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, U.K., EU, Japan, South Korea, Australia, India, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and new government regions in the U.K. and Israel.
Oracle Cloud at Customer of Gen-2
Oracle Cloud at Customer enables organizations to get all the benefits of Oracle Cloud Database delivered securely on-premise in their own data centers. With Gen 2 Exadata Cloud at Customer, Oracle delivers an enterprise-scale database cloud service with significantly improved resiliency and automation, simplified deployment, and reduced costs compared to the previous generation. Gen 2 Exadata Cloud at Customer is based on the recently announced Oracle Exadata X8, which delivers industry-leading performance and availability, as well as a broad range of exclusive capabilities based on modern machine learning.
Oracle expanding the security portfolio with new cloud services
Oracle announced three new cloud security services, including Oracle Data Safe, Oracle Cloud Guard, and Oracle Maximum Security Zones provide centralized security configuration and posture management, as well as automated enforcement of security practices. These intelligent systems operate in the background enforcing security practices, gathering telemetry from across the cloud environment, and surfacing misconfigurations, anomalous behavior and risks to respond to through automated means.
First Autonomous Operating System
Oracle announced the availability of Oracle Autonomous Linux. Oracle Autonomous Linux, along with the new Oracle OS Management Service, is the first and only autonomous operating environment that eliminates complexity and human error to deliver unprecedented cost savings, security, and availability for customers.
Oracle Autonomous Linux, in conjunction with Oracle OS Management Service, uses advanced machine learning and autonomous capabilities to deliver unprecedented cost savings, security, and availability and frees up critical IT resources to tackle more strategic initiatives.
